STATEMENT: Federal Workers Slam Trump Attacks on Department of Education, Marginalized Americans

June 17, 2026

Washington, D.C. — In response to the Trump Administration gutting the Department of Education by redesignating oversight of special education and civil rights, the Federal Workers Alliance for Democracy released the following statement:

"The Trump Administration is effectively taking another sledgehammer to the Department of Education by transferring core responsibilities, including civil rights enforcement and special education programs, to other federal agencies.

Project 2025 laid out this playbook from the start: gut federal education funding, clear the way for discrimination against marginalized students, divert taxpayer dollars to private schools, and enable book bans and classroom censorship. In March 2026, the firing of half the Department of Education's staff and the stretching of the agency beyond its limits created the first major crack in a deliberate effort to dismantle the department.

While this comes as no surprise, that does not make it any less dangerous or devastating for students, parents, and communities across the country. The damage being done today will take years of thoughtful, sustained action to repair. That work begins at the ballot box this November."

Federal Workers Alliance for Democracy is a coalition of federal employees, allies, and advocacy groups committed to mobilizing the federal workforce to defend democracy and essential government services.
